The Wine of Centenarians

Sardinia has an ancient winemaking tradition that makes it one of the world’s most renowned regions for the quality of its wines.

Until after World War II, our wines were exported in large quantities to France and other countries, serving as the basis for their prized chateaus and other renowned foreign wines. This is a secret that perhaps has been made public for the first time, but one that our long-standing winemakers are proud of.

Now they are produced, refined, and bottled in Sardinia, and production is barely sufficient to meet global demand.

One of the most important is Cannonau, made from Grenache grapes, an ancient grape variety with small black grapes, grown mainly in the Nuoro area, Barbagia, Mandrolisai, and Ogliastra—the very area with the highest concentration of centenarians in the world.

Nepente di Oliena also belongs to this type of wine, praised even by Gabriele D’Annunzio, who wrote: if you drank a sip of it, you would never want to leave the shadow of the white rocks…

It is a heady, smooth red wine, generally aged for 2 to 5 years, with an alcohol content of no less than 12.5 percent. It contains more than three times the antioxidants of other red wines and contributes to the health of our cardiovascular system, according to studies by Sardinian, American, and many other doctors.

Sardinian winemaking traditions have ancient origins. It seems that even the god Bacchus contributed to them, since a Saint named Bachis is honored in Sardinia, who must be a surrogate for Bacchus himself after Christianity banned his cults and destroyed his temples. It is also noteworthy and significant that, even if referring to the Roman era, 9 statuettes of Bacchus and 3 of Bacchae have been found in Sardinia; (cf. Meloni P., La Sardegna Romana, Sassari 1990, 2nd ed., pg. 395.)

“From an ethnographic point of view, first of all very notable and even astonishing are some representations found in the church of Bolotana (NU) dedicated to its patron saint Bakis and completed only in 1594: on the external façade and also on the capitals of the internal pillars there are bas-relief figures of dancers, both men and women, and the males have their genitals exposed. In the area there is also the belief that women are possessed or possessed by the Saint, and therefore enjoy the consideration and devotion of other women. Nothing different from what was said of the Bacchae and Maenads possessed or possessed by the god Bacchus,

Aside from this curious digression, the other Sardinian wines are equally remarkable and delightful. The various Moscatos, Malvasias, Cagnularis, Torbatos, Vermentinos, and Vernaccias all have qualities that true gourmets recognize by their aroma alone and never fail to praise.
